When my Phoebe passed away I wanted to commemorate her at Christmas and found a perfect ornament with a cat wrapped in Christmas lights with a santa hat on.
I had been looking for one for Puss, and when visiting Leeds Castle Neverland, I spotted this little gem. I often called her a little tinker, so a Xmas decoration of Tinkerbell seems quite fitting, so I treated myself.
This, along with a nutcracker, is the only Xmas bits up in my house, bar the lovely cards people have sent me.
And you know what, that is ok.
It’s ok for me to not want to do Christmas this year.
This is my first Christmas without her by my side.
It’s ok to feel my way through it, in a way that feels right for me.
I’m giving myself permission.
So, Tinkerbell has pride of place next to me and is one of my memorials to Puss.
How do you commemorate passed pets at Christmastime?
P.S. It’s not wrong either if you don’t, you do you, I’ll do me!
P.P.S. If you are sadly in the same position: firstly, I am really sorry for your own loss, grieving can be so much harder at a time of year when so many people and contexts make it all about ‘happy, happy, happy’. And secondly, give yourself permission to get through this festive period in the way that feels right for you too!
