My beautiful baby had some more acupuncture yesterday. It is lovely to see how she responds each time to the needles, and this time, as she didn’t need as much reassurance from me personally, I was even able to take a photo of her during the session. Sorry, it is a bit blurry!

I told her on the last session, that if she was really enjoying it, to not shake her body or head so the needles come out, and that way they will have more of an effect. She has for this session and the last kept them in for a lot longer. that’s her ‘done’ moment, when she shakes them out.

She loves relaxing and watching the horses and birds in the fields outside the window whilst she is having her treatment too.

Each session there is the obvious signs of relaxation, the heavy glazed eyes, the body relaxes, sometimes we get yawns and stretches, today she generally just appeared very settled, didn’t move as much as previous sessions, just relaxed as myself and the vet chatted and observed her.

It’s great building my connection with her and her body even more by observing her during and after a session too, what her body does at the points where the needles are inserted, her calming responses, and it’s all very interesting as I am concentrating on building more of a relationship with my own body too right now!

I think often people think cats will not tolerate acupuncture, but actually, given the right vet who observes and does as much as they need and no more, and builds on that, then it will allow it the best chance to succeed. With Puss, her first session was just over 10minutes of the needles because that was all Puss could take. But each session, she is monitored very carefully, and she always shakes the needles out when she is done, or our vet can see she has had her fill and will remove them.

Puss likes going, she has told me. She doesn’t like the car journey much, understandably, but she loves being with this vet and her gentle nature, with the space and fresh air, and the way she feels after her treatment. She always sleeps on the way home and often for the rest of the day.

I also find that I feel very zonked, like I have had a session, when I come out of her session as well, which i feel relates to the strong bond that i have with her and being so attuned to her. You may have that too if your pet has healing or other holistic treatments like this too!

So, if you have a cat, don’t rule out acupuncture as a possiblity where appropriate. And you can contact veterinary acupuncturists by going to the dedicated website https://abva.co.uk/ (British Association of Veterinary Acupuncturists).
